Our Father, who art in Heaven
As you know, another name for the Our Father is the Lord’s Prayer. It is called the Lord’s Prayer because Our Lord Jesus Christ himself thought it out and gave it to us to use. It happened that one day, after he had been praying, his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray…” and his reply was to give them the Our Father (NRSV, Luke 11:1-4).
Hallowed be thy Name
In the Lord’s Prayer the words “in earth as it is in Heaven” go, not only with “Thy will be done”, but also with “Hallowed be thy Name” and “Thy Kingdom come”. So it is really, “May thy name be hallowed in earth as it is in Heaven”.
Thy Kingdom come
God’s Kingdom
When we use the word kingdom we often think of it as the land ruled over by a king, or a queen. But of course, more important than the land are the people in it who are ruled. So, even if a king is in exile from his native land, he is still king if his subjects are loyal to him.
